One of the new regions carved out of the existing Northern Region is the North East Region. The capital town of the region is Nalerigu in the East Mamprusi Municipal Assembly. The region has six (6) districts. The North East Region is bordered on the north by the Upper East Region, on the east by the eastern Ghana-Togo border, on the south by the Northern Region and on the west by the Upper West Region. Nayiri Nabhaga is the king of Mamprugu traditional area which is part of the entire region.
Damba Festival
Originally celebrated by Muslims to mark the birth of Prophet Mohammed on the 12th day of the third month of the lunar calendar, Damba has taken a traditional rather than Islamic turn. It is a two-day festival which is full of pageantry and showmanship, and celebrated by most of the ethnic groups in northern Ghana.
Economy
More than 85% of the economically active population are agricultural.
Religion and Language
The population of the region is fairly distributed among Christianity, Islam and Traditional African Religion.
The official language also spoken is English, however, most inhabitants speak at least one of the Niger-Congo languages being it Mampruli, Tampulma, Bimoba, Kusaal, Dagbani or Konkomba of the Gur subfamily.
Climate
The North East Region experience almost the same climate changes as the Savannah Region. However, in this region, the wet season is between June and November, and the temperatures can vary between 47°C during the day and 17°C at night.
